Together for Transformed Children: Launching VNZ’s 2025 December Mental Health Campaign

December has arrived with its blend of celebration, pressure, reflection, and the quiet battles that many children and families fight behind closed doors. At community level, we see how stress, family conflict, school pressure, economic hardship, and unhealed trauma can silently shape how children grow and how safe they feel. That is why today Viva Network Zimbabwe is launching the December Mental Health Campaign: “Healthy Minds, Safe Children.”

This month-long campaign brings together churches, community volunteers, child protection champions, families, and young people to shine a light on one powerful truth: mental wellbeing is a child protection issue. Children thrive, learn, and feel safe when the adults in their world are emotionally regulated, attentive, and mentally healthy. They suffer when caregivers are overwhelmed, unsupported, and struggling alone.

From the first day of this campaign, our teams have already reported a warm sense of unity; parents showing curiosity, youth asking honest questions, church leaders offering prayer and safe spaces, and volunteers committing to learn how to support families better. One mentor parent said during a conversation about this campaign, “When my mind is heavy, it affects my children. When I heal, they heal.” This simple truth sits at the centre of our mission this month.

Throughout December, our daily messages, shared on WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok, and community platforms, will remind families how everyday habits such as listening, resting, talking, praying, encouraging, and spending meaningful time with children strengthen their mental resilience. We will share age-appropriate tips, caregiver support messages, practical coping tools, and faith-rooted encouragement to help homes become places of calm and safety. Our goal is not only to teach, but to help families practise mental health together.

Messages will run through community churches and partner organisations in Hatcliffe, Chitungwiza, Glen View, Seke, and other network hubs. These spaces will allow parents to reflect on their own stress, identify early emotional changes in children, and learn simple protective behaviours: positive communication, emotional first aid, noticing warning signs, and offering safe responses. For children, creative activities, sports, storytelling, and peer-to-peer sessions will help them express themselves freely and build confidence.

This campaign carries forward VNZ’s long-standing vision to see all children living in safe and loving homes and communities. A child who feels heard is safer. A parent who feels supported can protect better. A community that talks openly about wellbeing becomes a shield against abuse, neglect, and harmful coping behaviours.

As we begin this journey, we invite every one; partners, churches, schools, families, and community groups to walk with us. Every shared message, every kind conversation, every moment of listening, every act of love strengthens the safety net around a child. Together, we can make this December a month of healing, awareness, and renewed hope.

May this campaign remind us that mental health is not a luxury, it is a foundation. When we nurture it, mental health, children flourish, families grow stronger, and communities become places of transformation.

Let’s build a mentally healthy December.
Let’s build safer and loving homes and communities
Let’s build transformed children.
