Be active physically, it keeps your mind healthy
Today we focus on the power of being active.
Movement is one of the simplest, most natural ways to improve mental health. Whether it’s playing sport, running, dancing, skipping, or even walking, physical activity reduces stress, boosts mood, and gives both children and adults more energy.
For children, movement is not just exercise; it’s joy, connection, confidence-building and emotional release. For adults, it clears the mind, reduces tension, and helps us feel more grounded.
Viva Sport has shown us again and again that when children move, laugh, play and compete in healthy ways, something changes inside them. They become more focused, more positive, and more resilient.
Here are ways families and communities can make movement part of daily life:
1. Make Activity Fun, Not a Burden
Children love games. Instead of formal exercise, try:
- skipping ropes
- relay races
- dancing challenges
- football or netball
- simple running games
When it feels like play, it becomes natural.
2. Move for at Least 15 Minutes a Day
You don’t need long gym sessions.
Just try:
- a short walk,
- a quick stretch,
- a fun dance,
- light jogging.
Small bursts of movement make a big difference for the brain.
3. Use Sport to Build Confidence
Sport teaches children teamwork, problem-solving, patience and discipline.
Even shy or quiet children often open up when they play.
4. Reduce Stress Through Movement
When the body moves, the brain releases chemicals that help you feel calmer and happier.
This works for both children and adults. Even a 10-minute walk can reset your mood.
5. Join Children in Their Play
Adults also benefit from jumping, stretching and laughing.
It strengthens relationships and models a healthy, active lifestyle.
6. Connect Activity With Mental Health
Talk to children about how their bodies feel before and after playing.
Help them understand:
- “I feel lighter.”
- “I feel happy.”
- “My mind is clearer.”
This teaches lifelong emotional awareness.
Today’s Action
Choose one simple activity today… dance for five minutes, take a short walk, jump rope, or kick a ball around.
Do it with a child if you can.
Movement heals.
Movement strengthens.
Movement brings joy, inside and out.
