Makanyara Mukhokholo’s Journey from Seed Grant to Thriving Tailoring Business

Makanyara Mukhokholo, a talented tailor from Hatcliffe, Harare, exemplifies the transformative power of community support and entrepreneurial spirit. Her journey from struggling to secure capital to establishing a successful business is a testament to resilience and the impact of targeted financial assistance.

Initially, Makanyara faced significant challenges in launching her tailoring business due to a lack of capital to purchase materials. Despite her skills, she was unable to start her business until she received a $50 seed grant from Viva Network Zimbabwe. This grant provided the crucial boost she needed, enabling her to buy fabric and begin sewing wrap-over skirts. Her craftsmanship quickly gained attention, paving the way for more opportunities.

Makanyara’s breakthrough came when she secured a contract to sew uniforms for a local crèche. To fulfill this order, she utilized funds from her Internal Savings and Lending (ISAL) group, known locally as mukando. This financial support was instrumental in purchasing the necessary materials, allowing her to complete the contract successfully.

As her reputation for quality work spread, Makanyara began receiving additional contracts from surrounding learning centers to supply uniforms. The steady stream of orders has significantly expanded her business, allowing her to reinvest in her enterprise. One notable investment was the purchase of an overlocking machine, a critical tool for producing professional-grade garments.

The growth of her business has had a profound impact on Makanyara’s personal life. With the income generated from her thriving tailoring business, she is now able to provide for her children’s needs, including food and clothing. Additionally, she has managed to improve her living conditions by purchasing new furniture for her home.

Makanyara Mukhokholo’s story is a powerful example of how small grants and community support can ignite entrepreneurial success, leading to sustainable livelihoods and improved quality of life. Her journey from a tailor without capital to a successful businesswoman underscores the potential for economic empowerment through targeted financial assistance and community-driven initiatives.
