The Power of Listening – GTC Day 5
The Good Treatment Campaign continues to make waves across Zimbabwe, and today, on Day 5, we highlight one of the most powerful yet often overlooked acts of love: listening to children.
Why Listening Matters
Children don’t just need to be provided for, they need to be heard. When adults take the time to truly listen, it shows children that their voices are valued, their feelings are valid, and their presence matters. Listening is not about always having the right answers; sometimes, it’s about creating the safe space where children feel free to express themselves.
As the Good Treatment Campaign manual reminds us:
“Listening shows kids that they matter, that we love them, and that their words are important. You are not always right; sometimes you just need to listen. Taking the time to truly listen communicates our love and respect even more than words alone. This inspires children to open up to you.”
The Impact of Listening
- Emotional security: A child who feels heard is more likely to develop self-confidence and resilience.
- Stronger relationships: Listening deepens trust between children and adults, whether in families, schools, or churches.
- Better guidance: Children who are listened to are more open to receiving guidance, correction, and encouragement.
On this fifth day of the campaign, we encourage families, teachers, faith leaders, and community members to practice active listening with the children in their lives. Ask questions, give them time to respond, avoid interruptions, and show genuine interest in what they share.
Together, by becoming better listeners, we can transform the way children experience love and care in Zimbabwe.
