Training the Next Generation of Child Protection Champions
Protecting children starts with listening to them, equipping them, and giving them the tools to lead. During the week of 19 to 23 May 2025, we held an intensive training for Junior Child Protection Champions… young people who are stepping up to keep their peers safe and to speak out for children’s rights.
This wasn’t just a training, it was transformation. We saw young leaders step into their purpose with boldness, courage, and compassion. The program was interactive and practical, focusing on building leadership, teamwork, and safety awareness.
Peer-to-Peer Education
Participants were trained to teach and support other children on child protection issues. They used role-plays, story-sharing, and real-life scenarios to make learning relatable and fun. The children chose the topics themselves and led the sessions… proving they are not just learners, but leaders.
Formation of Child-Led Protection Committees
Children were guided in forming or strengthening church-based child protection committees. These groups allow children to report abuse, advocate for their rights, and take part in decision-making.
Teamwork and Leadership Building
Through games and group activities, the participants learned how to work together, share ideas, and support one another. These sessions helped build confidence, empathy, and a spirit of unity.
Hands-On Practice
We took the learning beyond the classroom. The champions carried out simulations, mock interviews, and awareness campaigns to apply what they had learned. These exercises prepared them to act as protection focal points in their schools and communities.
Safety and Safeguarding
Participants were taught how to safely report abuse and protect both themselves and others. Topics included confidentiality, referral pathways, and ethical behaviour when dealing with sensitive issues.
The journey is just beginning!
The Junior Child Protection Champions are not just future leaders… they are already making a difference. At VNZ, we are proud to walk alongside them, guiding and cheering them on as they create safer, more supportive spaces for every child.
