Viva Sport builds hope through play in Mabvuku

Excitement, laughter, and teamwork filled the community of Mabvuku as Viva Network Zimbabwe, in partnership with Destiny Mission Organization, hosted a joyful Viva Sport Tournament. Children ran, kicked, scored, and celebrated. But this was more than a fun day of games. It was a day of building confidence, friendships, and stronger communities.

Over 270 children aged 6 to 17 participated, coming from local churches, schools, and homes to enjoy a day filled with football, encouragement, and learning. Both boys and girls played side by side, showing that every child deserves a chance to participate, shine, and belong. For some, it was their first time stepping onto a football pitch. For others, it was a chance to showcase their talent. Every child walked away with more than memories of goals and cheers. They left with hope, pride, and a stronger sense of identity.

Learning Beyond the Game

The tournament gave children a safe place to play, discover new skills, and experience the joy of simply being children. Through sport, they also learned the values of teamwork, discipline, leadership, and resilience. These lessons were not about pressure or performance, but about encouragement and growth.

As one participant put it: “I scored one goal today, but I also made new friends. That feels like winning too.” Such moments reflect how Viva Sport uses football not only to entertain, but also to reduce risky behaviors, inspire purpose, and connect communities.

The Role of Adults and Mentors

Adults played an essential role in making the day successful. Local coaches and volunteers guided the matches, encouraged fair play, and mentored the children throughout the day. Their presence created a caring environment where children felt safe and supported. International volunteers also joined in, bringing smiles and a sense of unity that reminded the children they are part of a global family that values them.

It felt as though the whole world was cheering for the children of Mabvuku.

More Than Sport

At its heart, Viva Sport is about transforming lives through play. It teaches values through fun, builds resilience through teamwork, and creates safe spaces where children can be celebrated. Children learn how to support one another, listen, lead, and stay focused — lessons that extend far beyond the football field.

A Lasting Impact

By the end of the day, it was clear that something powerful had taken place. Children felt seen, valued, and celebrated. They were reminded that they matter. Viva Network Zimbabwe remains committed to creating opportunities like this, where every child can grow in confidence and hope. With the support of churches, schools, and communities, Viva Sport will continue to reach more children with love, guidance, and opportunity.
