Teach Responsibility Through Positive Guidance – GTC Day 17

On Day 17 of the Good Treatment Campaign, we emphasize the importance of teaching responsibility to children in a positive and encouraging way. Rules are necessary, but how they are communicated can make all the difference in how children respond and learn.

Why Positive Guidance Works

Children are more likely to follow rules when they understand them as part of daily life rather than as punishments or ultimatums. Using calm and constructive language builds respect and cooperation instead of fear or resistance.

For example, instead of responding with frustration when a child says, “I want a biscuit,” we can gently guide them by saying:
“When you sit at the table, you can have a biscuit.”

This approach communicates expectations clearly while reinforcing responsibility in a respectful way.

Today’s Key Message

“Make it clear to your child that certain rules must be followed, but explain them in a positive way, without threats or ultimatums. For example, if your child says, ‘I want a biscuit,’ respond with, ‘When you sit at the table, you can have a biscuit.’ Let us help our children understand that responsibility is a daily expectation.”

Benefits of Positive Rule-Setting

When adults set rules positively, children:

  • Learn to connect actions with outcomes naturally
  • Develop a sense of responsibility without fear
  • Feel respected and heard in the process
  • Grow into disciplined and cooperative individuals

Call to Action

On this seventeenth day, let us strive to replace threats and ultimatums with positive guidance. By doing so, we foster responsibility in children not through fear, but through trust, consistency, and respect.
