Speak kindly, it helps you and your children feel safe and valued

Words carry power. They can lift someone up or slowly break them down. For children especially, words spoken by adults, peers, and community members often become the voice they hear inside their own minds.

Today’s message invites us to pause before we speak.

Before talking about someone, especially when they are not present, ask yourself: “Would this hurt them if they heard it?” That simple question can protect dignity, mental health, and relationships.

When children hear insults, gossip, or negative labels, they may internalise shame and begin to believe they are not good enough. Over time, this can affect their confidence, emotional safety, and sense of belonging. But when children hear encouraging, respectful, and affirming words, they grow stronger inside.

Choosing kind words:

  • Builds self-esteem and confidence
  • Reduces shame and emotional harm
  • Teaches children empathy and respect
  • Creates safer families, schools, and communities

Being kind does not mean ignoring problems. It means correcting without humiliating, speaking truth without cruelty, and refusing to participate in gossip or insults.

This Mental Health Month, let us model responsible speech. Let our words protect, heal, and build, because real strength is shown in kindness.
