Listening Protects Children’s Mental Health: GTC Day 7

On Day 7 of the Good Treatment Campaign, we focus on the importance of keeping communication channels open with children. Listening is more than just hearing words; it is about meeting children’s emotional needs, especially during their most vulnerable years.

Why Communication Matters

Children, particularly teenagers, often struggle with emotions they cannot fully express. When parents, guardians, and caregivers fail to listen with empathy, children may withdraw, feeling isolated or misunderstood. Over time, this lack of safe communication can contribute to:

  • Emotional distress and low self-esteem
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Risk-taking behaviors, including substance abuse
  • A breakdown of trust between children and adults

On the other hand, when adults listen actively and respond with empathy, children feel valued, respected, and understood — strengthening their mental health and resilience.

Today’s Key Message

“If children don’t feel that talking to you meets their emotional needs, they are less likely to do it again. Keeping those communication channels open is essential, especially for parents of teenagers, and helps protect children’s emotional and mental health. Let us listen to children more actively and show empathy.”

Call to Action

On this seventh day, we invite every parent, teacher, faith leader, and community member to practice empathetic listening. That means:

  • Making time to talk and connect with children daily
  • Avoiding judgment or interruption when they share
  • Showing patience, empathy, and understanding
  • Creating safe spaces where their voices are respected

Building a Culture of Trust

Children who feel heard are more likely to open up, seek guidance, and trust adults in moments of need. By committing to active listening, we safeguard not just their childhood but also their future.

Continue following and sharing the campaign throughout September. Together, let’s raise a generation of children who are heard, valued, and supported.
