Story of change
Mentor Parents become everyday healers for children
Community parents are being equipped to listen, respond safely and connect children and families with support.

The Mentor Parent initiative is part of VNZ’s Child Friendly Churches programme. Trusted mothers and fathers from local communities serve as listening ears and guiding hands for children and families. They offer emotional support, visit homes, connect vulnerable children with churches and social services, and help families seek appropriate assistance.\n\nIn June 2025, mentor parents took part in trauma-informed counselling training focused on listening, presence and practical approaches to supporting children affected by abuse, neglect or emotional distress. VNZ reported that more than 330 families were receiving support through the initiative and that 45 trained mentors from earlier cycles were actively responding in their communities.\n\nThe programme shows how equipping trusted local caregivers can strengthen the first line of care around children.
